Guest
Hi, this was my approach: because VESLO is also 5 digits long, K must be less then 1/6 of 10 which means it´s 1. That make O=6. "V" must be greater or equal 6 and not equal "O". So it is greater equal 7. "A" must be less then 6 in order to keep the sum 5 digits long. The rest was more or less brute force. I saw that A=3 and A=4 did not work well because of repeating digits on the VESLO side. What I would like to know: Is there a more elegant approach to the solution of this riddle ? Guest
Found the answer mostly thru trial and error. Like Shryke, I knew K=1 and therefor O=6, because VESLO was only 5 digits long like KAJAK. "V" then had to be >6. Substituting numbers>1 I soon found that "A" was not 2,3, or 4. Everything soon fell into place and I had the answer. K=1 6(KAJAK) = VESLO A=5 6(15451) = 92706 J=4 V=9 E=2 S=7 L=0 O=6 Edited February 3, 2010 by rover
