Sorry to nitpick, but the wording is a bit confusing (unless that's intentionally part of the trick to this). It could just read "what is the minimum possible value of x2 + y2"... the fact that you're looking for a sum is a given. Again, unless that's part of the trick.

x^2 + y^2 = 4

at

(-sqrt(2 + sqrt(2)), -sqrt(2 - sqrt(2))) = (-1.84776,-0.765367)

(-sqrt(2 - sqrt(2)), sqrt(2 + sqrt(2))) = (-0.765367, 1.84776)

(sqrt(2 - sqrt(2)), -sqrt(2 + sqrt(2))) = (0.765367, -1.84776)

(sqrt(2 + sqrt(2)), sqrt(2 - sqrt(2))) = (1.84776, 0.765367)
