Guest
Ok, so here's my first post. Could be great, might be rubbish - have a crack and let me know! If: e+d = 1 j+l = 5 and a+b = 100 then give one possible answer to: ?+? = 1000 (where, just to be clear, ? and ? are letters of the alphabet). 0 Guest
a+b=100 therefore (a+b)(a+b) equals 1000. Following order of operations knowing a+b=100 =)
0 Guest
a+b=100 therefore (a+b)(a+b) equals 1000. Following order of operations knowing a+b=100 =) That would fit with the last sum... but it doesn't make sense of the other examples. Guess again... 0 Guest
Whoops didn't think that through all the way. [(j+l)2]a+b=1000
0 k-man
Whoops didn't think that through all the way. [(j+l)2]a+b=1000 I think the OP is looking for just 2 letters that when added will result in a 1000, like x+y=1000.
0 Guest
The letters are the first letters of words for which the numbers are relevant? For example, and elephant and a fox together have 8 legs so e+f=8? Stupid example but I have no imagination
0 Guest
Lots of interesting ideas. Sorry to mislead by saying the (a+b)(a+b) idea solved it in part - clearly it took a few looks for someone to spot that 100*100 is not 1000! So here's a little clue... swap letters for numbers, but keep the alphabet in mind? And K-man is correct. Answer is letter plus letter = 1000. There are a number of possible combinations, but x+y ain't one of them! Edited January 19, 2011 by Southpaw_Pete

OK, a bigger hint needed? replacing the letters with numbers, and then relating what they add up to back to the alphabet... 0 Guest
e+d = 5+4 = 9 = i = 1 in roman numerals. j+l = 10+12 = 22 = v = 5 in roman numerals. Same for a+b. So 1000 is M = 13 = 10+3 = j+c. Or 9+4 = i+d. Or a bunch of others.

If:
e+d = 1
j+l = 5
and
a+b = 100
then give one possible answer to:
?+? = 1000
(where, just to be clear, ? and ? are letters of the alphabet).
