visual

remove the 2 next to the six and reverse it

remove the 4 next to the six and reverse it

remove the 7 next to the six and reverse it

therefore: 68

next remove the 8 next to the six and reverse it and you have 6 left over

or

more mathematical

remove the 2 and reverse

remove the 4 and reverse

remove the 6 and reverse

therefore: 78

then next remove the 8 and reverse and you'd have the 7 left over

Actually it is the correct answer but the approach is not what i thought

:)

As mohanrao2005 (inadvertantly?) displayed.

78.

(A) Between each step, the smallest digit is removed and the sequence of digits are reversed.

or

(B) In each n step the 2n digit is removed and the sequence of digits are reversed.

With procedure (A), the final number of the sequence would be 8.

With procedure (B), the final number of the sequence would be 7.

What is the next number in this series

87426... 6478... 876

Just a comment in that wording can make a difference.

A series is defined as the sum of the terms of a sequence (finite or infinite).

I did make the assumption that sak_iko was asking for the next number of a sequence, an ordered list of elements or terms, but If what actually is sought is the next term of a series, we may all have given incorrect solutions.

What is the next number in this series

87426... 6478... 876

The answer is 68

87426 changed to 6472 - thus the 4th digit was removed and the sequence flipped

6472 changed to 876 - thus the 3rd digit of the original number was removed and the sequence flipped again

Logically that means the second digit from the original number gets removed and you flip the sequence again and end up with the answer above

What is the next number in this series

87426... 6478... 876

The answer is 78. You keep flipping the number then removing the lowest number.
