So....it seems there are endless possibilities. Let me add some more info to help narrow it down

When I saw part of the first word

TC

I was confused and thought (what is THAT doing THERE)

Then I came across part of the second word

HE

Now I understood the message, and knew what I would have to do.

(there are only 2 words in the message)

Were you driving and saw STOP AHEAD pavement markings? The S, P, and right side of the O in STOP could have been obscured and made it look like a TC. Likewise the two A's and the D in AHEAD could have worn away. But, when you saw the road coming to an end, you knew exactly what you had to do! Terrible maintenance if that's the case...

Yep, that's it.

I design roads for a living - its a natural guess. Still took me a while because I couldn't find a sign or marking with "TC" except some obscure ones about ditches. Cherry did a good job to cut that O in half - I guess he must have been driving in the backwoods. -_-

*she* was on a heavily traveled road in Maryland, which needs to have its lines and markings repainted. Know anyone in the MD transportation dept?
