First fill the 3-liter container leaving 5 liters in the 8-liter container. Then pour the 3 liters into the 5-liter container. Next fill the 3-liter container from the liquid in the 8-liter container leaving 2 liters in it. Finish filling the 5-liter container from the liquid in the 3-liter container leaving 1 liter in it. Next pour the liquid from the 5-liter container back into the 8-liter container making it have 7 liters. Pour the 1 liter of liquid from the 3-liter container into the 5-liter container. Then fill the 3-liter conainer with liquid from the 8-liter container leaving 4 liters in it. Pour the contents of the 3-liter container into the 5-liter container making it contain 4 liters. Thus, equally divided as long as you don't spill any! :P

Pour from 8 into 3, you end up with 5 in 8 and 3 in 3. Pour 3 into five. You end up with 5 in 8, 0 in 3 and 3 in 5. Pour 8 in 3, you end up with 2 in 8, 3 in 3, and 3 in 5. Pour 3 in 5. You end up with 2 in 8, 1 in 3, and 5 in 5. Pour five in 8. You end up with 7 in 8, 1 in 3 and 0 in 5. Pour 3 into 5, you end up with 7 in 8, 0 in 3, and 1 in 5. Pour 8 into 3, you get 4 in 8, 3 in 3, and 1 in 5. Pour 3 into 5 and you get 4 in 8 and 4 in 5. Viola! the contents are halved.

you have 3 containers, having capacities 8 litres, 5 litres and 3 litres. The container of 8 litre capacity contains 8 litres of milk. You have to distribute this milk into equal halves(4 litres) with the help of availaible containers. How will you do that?

Fill 5 litres container from 8 litre. Fill 3 litre container from 5 litre. Now each container has these quantities: 8 litre container contains 3 litre milk, 5 litre container has 2 litre milk and 3 litre container has 3 litre milk.

Now put milk from 3 litre container back into 8 litre container and from 5 litre container into 3 litre container. Now each container has these quantities: 8 litre container contains 6 litre, 5 litre container is empty and 3 litre container has 2 litre milk.

Now again fill 5 litre container from 8 litre container. Fill 3 litre container from 5 litre container. Now each container has these quantities: 8 litre container contains 1 litre, 5 litre container is 4 litre and 3 litre container has 3 litre milk.

In end put milk from 3 litre container into 8 litre container. Now each container has these quantities: 8 litre container contains 4 litre, 5 litre container is 4 litre and 3 litre container is empty.
