Don't get it.

Four times as many minutes ... compared to what?

four times as many minutes as between three o'clock "now" (the time being asked for) .... sorry my working was a bit ambiguous, hope now it is clear.

I think he is saying that if it is x minutes past 3:00 right now, then 50 minutes ago it was 4x minutes past 3:00. Is this correct?

That is pretty correct. But M cannot be 16, otherwise we would have

Sorry - typo. Of course it's 26.

5M+50=180

10M+100=360

M+10=36

M=26
