A cliff and a rope

Question

You are at the top of a 400 meter cliff with a 300 meter rope and there is a ring attached to the cliff at the top to which you can secure the rope. There is a second ring in the cliff at the 200 meter mark. No long distance untying, you can't untie the rope at the top when you are in the middle, but you can climb down that rope to the bottom of the cliff. You can't unravel the rope, it won't be strong enough if you do. The only other way down is a bridge which collapsed after you crossed it. How do you get down the cliff without killing yourself?

cut the rope into a 100 meters part and a 200 meters part. make a small loop at the end of the 100 meters rope and pass half of the 200 meters rope in it. tie the 100 meters rope to the top ring and climb down. Since you only passed the 200 meters rope into a loop, once you attached one end of this rope to the second ring, you can grab that part and pull the rest and climb down the remaining 200 meters.

And how do you support your weight while you do all this?

you hold on to the two parts of the rope a little bit higher than the ring and you tie one part. then you hold on to the part you just tied and pull the rest of the rope.

B

Why wouldn't you just tie the 400 foot rope into a continuous loop (which will hang 200 feet vertically - and must go through the loop/hoop at the top).

Climb down the 200 feet....

Hold on for dear life to the lower loop and rotate the rope until you can untie the knot... and untie it.

Then retie onto the new lower loop/hoop and climb down to the ground....

If you wanted to keep the rope you could use the same technique as before...

Advantage = No knife required... and keep all your rope...
