Question

I'm growling and hissing, although denied

A mortar and pestle are kept nearby

I wriggle and writhe

For I'm quite alive

Ensuring the fauna can grow and survive

I reach with my fingers and feel the wave

The master of many a hoggish knave

To roam, I'm not keen

Equator's my scene

I live on the isles and slither 'cross beans

Just some thoughts...

Islands = Java or Sumatra

Beans = Coffee

When I first read I thought it was guano or something like that. Don't some coffees come from that?

Not heading in the right direction yet

I fear I may have made this too abstruse if the BrainDeners haven't nailed it

It does admittedly call for a bit of not-quite-so-common knowledge for one of the clues

But not the whole riddle

I'm quite stumped, but it's one of the most beautiful and well written riddles I've seen in a long time. Words are SO well chosen.

Have something to do with food or medicine? That's what the mortar and pestle leads me to believe.

That's getting warmer

I originally thought

flora,

but I didn't think it fit, so I didn't say it.

I don't know why it must fall into a vegetable category, perhaps because of the survival/mortar and pestle, but that's not why I thought it wouldn't fit. Flora is not flowers, it's all natural plant life on the earth.

by the way, I wanted to eliminate my obvious first guess, and my husband reminded me of it when I read it to him.

it's not any sort of snake, is it?

not a snake. and not hunger or appetite: the answer, like the answers to my other riddles, and like my head, is quite concrete

Just to make sure that this is not the wrong direction - fingers are not cilia, and the answer has little to do with biology?

Aha, another biologist has come along!

You're following the right track. I suspect this riddle riddle's time is nigh.
