The end of all means

Question

Except at a funeral,

I am a welcome guest.

Those who want me, honestly,

Leave little room for jest.

Though I am worth a bundle,

I do regret to say,

No one yet has beaten mine,

in cheaper ways to pay.

I think you're mistaken here. NO JEST, and NOT welcome at the funeral. this is a very serious matter, we are talking about here

ha ha, I like to way you think

but it is both and I'll even offer you alternative lines (changes nothing but reads better maybe)

read it like this if you like

Except at a funeral, I am a welcome guest

Although those who truly want me,

Leave little room for jest

now its both

Silence?

Except at a funeral,

I am a welcome guest.

(silence means people have nothing to say about you)

Those who want me, honestly,

Leave little room for jest.

(people who want silence usually won't be in the mood to joke)

Though I am worth a bundle,

I do regret to say,

No one yet has beaten mine,

in cheaper ways to pay

(Silence is golden and it costs nothing)

:P

I agree with mav's answer, is it right?

no, what would silence pay? and you need to use a line of explanation to cover the funeral. the answer should be clearer. in some cultures, silence is insulting at a funeral. in some parts of Estern Europe you pay professional cryers, moaners, weepers.

i think that is what he was saying. silence isn't welcome at a funeral because it is 'insulting'

A Prank!, A Joke!, telling a joke, practical joke, pulling a prank on someone.

no. and that's not a welcome guest everywhere but funeral. any church ceremony will do. a school class. lots of other not welcome prank environments.

I don't know why, but "Thank you" is jumping out at me. It fits a few lines. Can be said in jest, but it would be said at a funeral, but in the capacity of "thank you for coming"

I dunno, just spitballing here.

Eh??? :D

I don't see how a job is a wrong answer.

1) If your job is to organize funerals, no one wants you over too soon.

2) If you want an honest job, you can't fool around.

3) A job is worth all your money, because that's how much it provides.

4) It is the only way for paying expenses (for most people at least).

no but this is EXACTLY the type of something we are looking for

why not try to solve all but funeral

I put funeral in first line to make it harder not easier, if it was the last line... you would perhaps only modify your answer not change it

That qualifies as MAJOR CLUE

message me if I'm right -

Honesty?

p.s. I hate you for writing this awesome riddle I can't stop thinking about...

that's an honest statement...

that's got a lot to do with part of the riddle and is one of the keys to the answer but is not the answer

No because that's many answers not one

1. funeral director

2. honest job

3. job worth a lot (are they all? does this stand for you?)

4 job that pays bills - ok - but how is working the cheapest way to pay

and pay for what btw?

so your answer varies to cover the riddle. we need one answer. simple answer.
