Question

Even though I have an endlessly difficult and intellectually stimulating job, I find it's not enough to satisfy the little wheels that constantly turn in my head. So here's my idea. I'd like to form a little group willing to read good books and discuss the ideas in the books in an open and intellectual manner. We can do both fiction and non-fiction, but the books must have some intellectual element or over-riding philosophical idea guiding the text. We do a chapter at a time or a certain number of pages or whatever and go slow enough that it's not a burden to keep up. I'd love to participate in something like this with other "smarties."

We can all suggest books and offer why we want to read them, then vote. Majority rules on what we read and we can all veto any book we find offensive for any reason with no questions asked. Sound good?

If you are interested, post your interest here and if we get 5 people it's a go.

Admin: if you have a problem with this activity here, I fully understand. Though, we'd hope you'd join in.

I think it is a wonderful idea.

I would be willing to participate as long as there is no pressure. I have found it difficult to even get back to our current discussion on the ark because my job can take enormous amounts of my time. I do not consider myself the intellectual equal of most of the people who would be willing to participate but I would be willing to give my opinion or view of whatever the current topic would be.

I look forward to seeing who will respond.

count me in.

Peace

I would be willing to give it a whirl. I'm fairly omnivorous in my reading habits, but I won't read pornography or anything I consider pornographic. I also have a fairly low tolerance for fiction that makes my eyes roll; I recently gave up on Red Mars about halfway through because the characterizations were so absurd and the human interactions faaaar less believable than the terraforming (which, considering the stretch of imagination required to accept terraforming, is really saying something). So I don't know if you want me or not.

My suggestion for a book: Goedel, Escher, Bach by Doug Hofstadter. Second possibility: On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins. Third possibility: Some incarnation of Stephen Hawking's Brief History.

My suggestion for a book: Goedel, Escher, Bach by Doug Hofstadter

That's on my top 5 "next to read" books. Maybe a good starter for the club.

If you look at my first post I said that a majority vote would determine the read, subject to an unconditional veto by any member, no questions asked. I think you'd be welcome. Is that 4 people now?

Cool. Everyone propose a book and we'll vote.

My proposal is "This is your brain on music." by Daniel Levitin.

I suggest that, when voting, we are not allowed to vote for our own book. Otherwise, we'll be like the Caribbean Pirates trying to elect a king.

Right up my alley Kiddo: I will take part in this wantingly so, thank for introducing the idea. I here you would be a good proof reader also. Hm! Just noticed the date on origin and maybe I'm not too late to get in on this if so, its ok. Though I seem to have a lot of time, its because I'm crazy involved

with getting online and familiar with all this compustuff. So many different terms, unfamiliar systems, I think I'll get it though. If a way to initiate a beginning user, of internet, was known to me

2 months ago I'd have saved myself great grief and many many hours of toil. The joy I extract from here is the beautiful of ideas. Yes I'd love, if you'd have me in on that circle. Hope I haven't dissapointed you already with windy and rambling BS.

With the new job since the beginning of this post I'm finding that I am too busy a lot of times to even post here on the non "heavy" topics. I'd still love to do this, as I read nightly, but I won't be able to be the "leader" of the post. If anyone else wants to propose a book and get it going, I am still in, but I won't be able to start it out.

Sorry :(

Writersblock, If you want, I can assume your duties until your ready to take the wheel again. First we have to all agree on a book. By posting your preference, you will be officially part of the first round of books. I would say that posts should be in no later than next Friday (one week). The book we read will be the one with the most votes. If your desired book doesn't win, just give it a go next time and participate in this one anyway. When responding with your choice also give a suggestion as to how long it will take you to read the book and then we'll do like an average or something.

Proposed books: This is your brain on music, The Man in the High Castle, Goedel, Esher, Bach

To get things going: my pick is The Man in the High Castle - only because that was next on my list anyway.

And I propose that after we decide in 1 week. We get 1 week to obtain the book and 2 weeks to read it. So, 3 weeks.

Let me know what you all think.

TO start this up again because i want to read some new books...

I have recently been reading Gardians of Ga-Hoole books (just finished #10 in 3 days...), and the Warriors books.

They relate a LOT. They're both about animals, that think on their own, and how they all fit together. The Warriors books were the ones i read first (shown to me by my sister), and are about cats. These cats live together, and work together, but there are more than one group of cats, or clans as they say. This makes for unhappiness and war. Warriors books are series. There are 2 different groups and times so far in this collection. The first i dont think has any special name. The second is called the power of 3.

The Gardians of Ga'hoole books are about owls, and the great Ga'Hoole tree. These owls are good and bad. The good ones are the Ga'Hoole owls, and the bad call themselves the pure ones. These were also shown to me by my sister. The Ga'Hoole books go in order, not in different happenings, and different times like Warriors.

Thats all for now!

This looks like an awesome topic...sucks that it died o.O Like a year ago...oh my gosh Peace, you read the same books as me XD Although, you started very late in the series for Warriors...that's like the first of the third set. Start with Into the Wild. Guardians rock! My name for Woon's Warrior Battle was Corynhoole...not sure if you've read that far XD Anyway, I'd love to do a book club, if anyone wants to join this revived topic...:)
