Question

I haven't made a WAI in a little while, so here's a straightforward one to get back into the rhythm:

I spent many years,

As a fearsome black bear.

When I was a Native for two,

Most really didn't care

From North of the border,

Commute for the tea

When they ask who changed the game

Everyone better say me!

First to get Forty in One

And Two in the total

Do you know who's the subject

Of this riddle, anecdotal?

Well, that's certainly a huge shove in the right direction.

Not the answer though.

Yeah, my first thought is something with hockey...I was thinking a canadian player that scored 40 goals in one season, so I started thinking Mario Lemieux...but I'm a bit rusty on my hockey facts...

Right track. Wrong lane.

First defenceman to score 40 goals in a season: Bobby Orr, Boston Bruin

He revolutionized the game, absolutely revamping the way that defensemen were viewed and how they would play the game for decades to come. He scored his 40 in a time when defensive minded skaters scored maybe once or twice.

I have the last stick he ever used, signed and hanging on my wall. He was incredible. Bobby Orr.

Anyways, well done Shakee, as expected.

Explanation:

I spent many years,

As a fearsome black bear. -> Played for the Boston Bruins

When I was a Native for two,

Most really didn't care -> Also played as a Chicago Blackhawk (whose mascot is a Native American) for two seasons

From North of the border, -> Good old Canadian

Commute for the tea -> Another reference to Boston

When they ask who changed the game

Everyone better say me! -> See above

First to get Forty in One -> Scored 40 goals in one season (1974-1975 season)

And Two in the total -> Won two Art Ross trophies, awarded to the most outstanding offensive player (1969-1970 and '74-'75 again). This is especially of note because he remains the only defensemen to EVER accomplish this, and in sports, records are made to be broken.

Do you know who's the subject

Of this riddle, anecdotal?

Also, the "Or, maybe not" in the header was meant to be a little guiding clue.
