Question

I help you in times of need, times of pleasure

Or so it seems.

My foes are split when I'm the talk, am I worthless

Or walk the walk

A barrier to overcome, to be ignored

Or swindle galore

The truth is I am in your head, but illusion

I'm called no more

What am I?

change of thought, with an explanation:

I help you in times of need - "Nerves of steel" can help you.

times of pleasure, or so it seems - Nerves route pleasurable impulses through your body.

my foes are split... am i worthless... walk the walk - Nerves can be a good thing or bad thing (i.e. "Wow, he's got nerves!" = good, or "Her nerves got to her" = bad)

A barrier to overcome... ignored negative "nerves" have to be overcome, but you can get "over" them.

Or swindle galore - if you get swindled you think "the NERVE of that guy!"

The truth is... - Nerves are in our brain.

but illusion... no more -- Science has proved nerves as an actual presence in the body, and not just an "illusion" like feelings.

No right answers so far. The riddle is a work in progress and I have added a few lines:

I help you in times of need, times of pleasure

Or so it seems.

My foes are split when I'm the talk, am I worthless

Or walk the walk

A fragment of the oldest craft, the modern brotherhood

At me laughed

Were they right or were they wrong, words of confidence

Kept me strong

A barrier to overcome, to be ignored

Or swindle galore

The truth is I am in your head, but illusion

I'm called no more
