Question

Alright, so I've read many other people's riddles/WAIs...so, I figured I'd write one...this one may be very easy to some, so...we'll see how quickly it gets solved.

I used to be unknown

and a source of great fear

Now there is plenty of warning

for when I draw near.

Calipso and Europa

and Ganymede are three

And Galileo is another

Specific name for me

I am noticable, though silent,

and I keep to the shadows.

My beauty and my splendor

Two of Eight never knows.

I wear my mask always,

both by day and by night.

I cause many to stare

Whether in awe or in fright

I'm part of the occult

but don't believe in ghosts

I've been around forever

that's something I can boast.

What am I?

I believe they are moons

Doesn't quite fit everything in the riddle...however that was the guess that I figured most people would make...I'll make one adjustment to the riddle:

I used to be unknown

and a source of great fear

Now there is plenty of warning

for when I draw near.

Calipso and Europa

and Ganymede are three

And Galileo is the fourth

Specific name for me

I am noticable, though silent,

and I keep to the shadows.

My beauty and my splendor

Two of Eight never knows.

I wear my mask always,

both by day and by night.

I cause many to stare

Whether in awe or in fright

I'm part of the occult

but don't believe in ghosts

I've been around forever

that's something I can boast.

Yes, it has to do with astronomy...

This is a tricky one, my answers only fit part of the riddle as i can tell.

I know Galileo had something to do with the first telescope or what we no call a telescope. If not a metior/comet would be my guess.

Is it an Eclipse?

WINNER! and welcome to the Den...Well done all...I figured this one wouldn't be too difficult!

I used to be unknown

and a source of great fear -Some ancient cultures believed eclipses were signs that the gods were angry

Now there is plenty of warning

for when I draw near. -We know about eclipses in the future since they just follow the laws of nature

Calipso and Europa

and Ganymede are three

And Galileo is another

Specific name for me -This stanza is actually a reference to the Eclipse IDE for programming languages (just google "eclipse"...it's the first thing)...these were the 4 specifically named builds for the program.

I am noticable, though silent, -If there's an eclipse, people know it, but it doesn't make sound

and I keep to the shadows. -An eclipse is simply a shadow passing infront of another body

My beauty and my splendor

Two of Eight never knows. -Mercury and Venus won't have eclipses because they have no moons

I wear my mask always, -"masking" the sun/moon

both by day and by night. -Solar and Lunar eclipses

I cause many to stare

Whether in awe or in fright -Some people stare at the eclipse in awe, others used to be afraid of them

I'm part of the occult -another name for an eclipse is an occultation

but don't believe in ghosts

I've been around forever

that's something I can boast. -Since moons and the sun were around, there have been eclipses

I've been trying to post for an hour so maybe I'm too late but...

And eclipse. The only part that doesn't fit is 'gallileo'. It's a probe, but I suppose you could stretch a point and call it a satellite.

The previous guesses of "eclipse" make sense if you are a developer. eclipse is a popular open-source development environment and each release from 3.2 through 3.5 has been code-named with astronomical entities:

3.2 = Calipso

3.3 = Europa

3.4 = Ganymede

3.5 = Galileo

If that isn't the right answer, that is one heck of a coincidence!

Great WAI!

That is correct...hence my icon being the mascot of Java programming language :c).

that stanza was my intent to be referencing the Eclipse IDE.

Well done!

I was gonna guess Lunar Eclipse, because of the mention of Jupiter's moons, but I never would have guessed the progammer's code thing connection!

Awesome riddle, Pickett! Please make more!
