Question

My name starts with G,

My brother's, a P.

I argue with S,

And also with T.

Initials too tricky?

Well, don't be too picky.

Just let me refine,

And our names, you'll divine.

S is a cynic,

And also quite cryptic.

With T, we walk,

Li'l bro, doesn't talk.

On our way to pay alms,

Ethics, our qualms.

But S, we recriminate,

To resolve, we create.

The polis of mind

On Earth, not to find.

Now are you able to see

Who the four of us be?

uggh, i'm stuck on the initials

Does it involve religion or politics?

The former, no, but doesn't every aspect of life involve the latter?

sports. possibly Gary Neville?

Had to Wiki him, sorry friend. I'm a bigger fan of the other football (you know, the one where the athletes rarely use their feet and the ball looks more like an egg?)

American football? Well I'm american, but I like "other" football, aka soccer, better. That was just based on the initials. I'm wondering if the initials are really for people though, you know, something more like good and sinful for G and S.

Does it involve astrology?

minerals?

Absolutely not to both. Sorry.

In a roundabout way, GMaster has come the closest to the right track.

on a similar track as dragontat...

made me think of Greek mythology, and especially the story of Oedipus:

although Oedipus doesn't start with a G, his son (and also his brother, since Oedipus married his mom) is named Polynices; the clues about 'S,' especially that S is 'cryptic' made me think of the Sphinx, whose riddle Oedipus was able to solve. 'T' could be the blind prophet Tiresias, with whom Oedipus argued about Creon's killer and Oedipus' own identity.

So some of the clues fit, some don't...

On the right track?

I was thinking of something like

[spoiler='maybe

']four characters from a book or moovie, like from LOTR or maybe Chronicles Narnia. But the letters don't quite fit.

You're right that they're characters, you're looking in the wrong genre.

You're on the right track, but searching on the wrong side of the road.

A couple hints:

-This riddle is mostly literal, so when I say they're people, I do mean it.

-Do you know your Latin? "Civitas" has a very similar meaning to "Polis"

-These characters are not fictitious, though the work that they're from is not wholly non-fiction, either.

I'll post some more hints later.

Though none have been right, great guesses, everyone! I like the depth of thought provided by the members of this form (yes, I am stroking your ego).

Galileo?

he argues with Scripture

and Fr. Tommaso Caccini publicly accused him of heresy.

Nope, that's a good guess though, getting warmer.

Here's a new stanza for some additional help:

S is the mentor

P, G, and T, the students

We all rarely agree

But we all extol prudence

So, then S=Socrates, P=Plato, T=Thucydides, G=Glaucon

So, then S=Socrates, P=Plato, T=Thucydides, G=Glaucon

T is actually Thrasymachus (Thucydides had nothing to do with Socrates), but other than that, well done. They are the four principal debaters in Plato's Republic.

Explanation

My name starts with G, -> Glaucon

My brother's, a P. -> Plato is the younger brother of Glaucon

I argue with S, -> Glaucon is a student of Socrates

And also with T. -> As is Thrasymachus

Initials too tricky?

Well, don't be too picky.

Just let me refine,

And our names, you'll divine.

S is a cynic,

And also quite cryptic. -> If you've ever read anything by Plato, I think you would agree that Socrates is quite difficult to follow.

With T, we walk,

Li'l bro, doesn't talk. -> Plato rarely has any dialogue in any of his works. Socrates is always the protagonist.

On our way to pay alms, -> Goes with the walking clue. At the beginning of the Republic, the four are walking to Athena to pay respects to the goddess

Ethics, our qualms. -> As with most ancient philosophy, the main topic regarded Justice

But S, we recriminate,

To resolve, we create.

The polis of mind -> Going with the previous three lines, Socrates et al decide to create an imaginary Republic in order to determine what is justice and what is best for men.

On Earth, not to find. -> The aforementioned Republic is completely unfeasible.

Now are you able to see

Who the four of us be?
