Riddle of the Jewel

Question

A diamond glinting in the sand

On a darkened beach in a distant land.

A sign for some, for others a gem

To garnish the tomes of learned men.

Maker of many save but two;

But for me there would be no you.

Edit:

A jewel glinting in the sand

On a darkened beach in a distant land.

A sign for some, for others a gem

To garnish the tomes of learned men.

Maker of many save but two;

Oldest of old, I’m totally new.

Destroyer, creator of all that you see,

Will you lend a name to me?

Remind me to take selenium and fish oils whenever I see you write "an easy one"...

I don't think this is the answer at all, but I keep coming back to something carbon related, as it's the basis of life. Perhaps I'm being too literal.

A star. I can make ti fit everything but the "all but two" line. That one is tripping me up.

My guess is Mother Constellation of the Northern Ladle- Ursa Major's 9 stars (or 7 with two helpers)

but it keeps reminding me of water- destroyer and maker at the same time... Maybe also, it sort of sounds like humans in general.

No joy. Sorry.

That's it! I've had it. I hereby lend whatever it is the name "Mickey." But I am only lending it the name, so I expect to have it back soon. HA! I lent the answer to the riddle a name, my own name, as it were. Did I win? :P

I am thinking perhaps it is an abstract not a concrete. I am thinking it is more of an idea type thing like

liberty or love or freedom.... something along those lines if ya know What I mean.

But anyway, my intial idea was

statue of liberty....

I know it doesn't fit, but still. Oh and btw, by abstract I mean something you can't see like see my spoiler "???". And concrete is something you can see like a shoe.
