Alex's gigantic mug puzzle

Question

Take a look at these mugs, would ya!

Ian and Davey glanced at Alex, who was holding the biggest

pair of ale mugs anyone ever saw. Jamie arrived next, out of

breath, from across the room. Crap, he said, I thought you

said jugs. Annie left an hour ago, chided Alex, you need your

ears cleaned. But now that I have your attention ...

I've measured these beauties, and they hold exactly 4 pints,

raising the blue mug in his left hand, and 5 pints, looking at

the green mug in his right. What's more, I've asked the barkeep

to fill those two 10-pint pitchers over on the bar.

Now here's my challenge for ya ...

If any of you geniuses can put exactly 2 pints of ale into

each of these mugs here, I'll buy the whole 20 pints. Then we'll

party. But think well and choose wisely, as they say, cuz if ya

take the bet and can't get it done in fewer than 10 pourings,

then you'll be buying the drinks.

Poor Jamie. He never saw a bet he didn't like. After all the

others passed, he gave it a try.

Any way Jamie won the bet?

Okay, here ya go

By my calculations I just spent one hour, made four attemps, and after all that pouring I bought 80 pints of flat ale. Kudos, you definitely got me with this one. But if it wakes me up in the middle of the night I'll be back to post a reply.

G'night

BTW I doubt your signature was a Freudian slip.

Oh, and that reminds me,

Would a Freudian Slip be Linguistic Lingerie?

Peace

Sit down before you read this, some would be shocked that I would even ask......

Are you allowed to dump or drink and count it as a pour?

Now my wife is losing sleep on this one.

Thanks,

Peace

Standard rules - a pour is a transfer from one container to another.

Each pour completely [a] fills the receiving vessel or empties the donating vessel.

Why on earth would you want to dump or drink any of this stuff?

Oh wait, ... never mind.

Hope that answers.

Ok here we go:

1. pour form first pitcher to the 4 (remaining 6)

2. throw the 4 away

3. pour form first pitcher to the 4 (remaining 2)

4. throw the 4 away

5. pour form first pitcher to the 5 (done with 5)

6. pour form second pitcher to the 4 (remaining 6)

7. throw the 4 away

8. pour form first pitcher to the 4 (remaining 2)

9. throw the 4 away

10. pour form first pitcher to the 4 (done with 4)

total 10 times

total 10 times -- hmm .. OP said fewer than 10 --

Half a pint on the house for a good try, nonetheless.

But you should know that Jamie and the boys would have run you out of Morty's, forever, for spoiling the party.

Can you do it [and maybe put the solution into a spoiler] without wasting any of the good stuff?

And remember, you can't drink any of it, until the puzzle is solved.
