Question

Together yet separate,

I never can retire;

For though I may stop working,

I am reborn by fire.

Conceived by one not dumb,

And born by killing another,

I am perfected by the noise,

Though I never had a mother.

You might use intelligence,

While others ask a doctor.

To solve this one, you may need to ask questions;

I will be your proctor.

Ethernet Cable, CAT 5/6 Cable.

No.

Transformer? Amplifier? Okay, I'm really just guessing circuit parts...I can only vaguely make a case for these

You have come the closest to the answer, but your focus is off.

Currenly, I'm also thinking in terms of an electronics component. Those possible references to intel. and a MD. Also, the line about questions, being querries? Maybe with yes/no answers referring to binary?

Perhaps a microchip?

A battery?

Together yet separate,

I never can retire; (Seperate cells that just keep going, and going, and going...)

For though I may stop working,

I am reborn by fire. (until they need to be recharged, fire as in electricity, power perhaps?

Conceived by one not dumb,

And born by killing another, (the redox reaction inside, one metal is depleted while another grows to keep the flow of electrons)

I am perfected by the noise,

Though I never had a mother. (a battery is rather self containing, so it would never have had parents)

You might use intelligence,

While others ask a doctor.

(sort of reminds me of the duracell ads where they show you all the things a battery is used for, i.e. computers, medical equipment)

To solve this one, you may need to ask questions;

I will be your proctor.

(perhaps we are constantly being monitored by batteries, we're dependent on them?)

am I close?

No, but just as close as lupetu.

Did you really have posts deleted?

No.

No.

ANOTHER CLUE: The last two lines are a direct statement, not a part of the puzzle.

how about...

a diode (i think that's the small circuit part that coverts AC to DC with the help of a compacitor)

No.

Resistor

Together yet separate, ---Made of two metal alloys

I never can retire; ---can't stop working or the electronic whachamcallit is done for.

For though I may stop working,

I am reborn by fire. ---Can be remade/replaced/reborn by melting it.

Conceived by one not dumb, ---made by someone smarter than me

And born by killing another, ----kills electricity/signal strength by producing a voltage drop

I am perfected by the noise, --- they produce/reduce electrical noise in a circuit

Though I never had a mother. --- not involved in memory storage so wouldnt be on a motherboard

You might use intelligence,

While others ask a doctor.---PhD in electrophysics?

To solve this one, you may need to ask questions;

I will be your proctor.

GAH! I have no clue but random thought....

transistor works so well! They are made of slightly different materials sandwiched together, they made vacuum tube obsolete (born by killing another), they work when there is a current ("fire") at the base, they were invented by a physicist with a PhD (doctor and father not mother?)...

Smart card for a cell phone??? or a hard driver for a cpu???

Ok, so it's often found as a component in computer circuits. It "has no mother," does this mean it's separate from the motherboard? I am guessing that this is a quickly evolving technology, or does that have nothing to do with it? How small is the entity in question?

It can be separate or combined with the motherboard of a computer.

Evolution has little to do with it, yet it can grow or shrink as needed.

does it have prongs? Is it a circuit board? this is so addicting

No. Again, close.

the computer in general

No.

Does doctor refer to a specific person? Or type of person?

Does 'noise' refer to electronic noise? Or sound?

No and no.

Someone got that already, if you'll read back.

Power

No

I'm stumped...read all the comments, and here are my best guesses. They aren't quite on the same train of thought, but here they go:

My best guess is a printer (stays dormant, makes noise, needs repairs that require a specialist "doctor", sprays ink (or "fires" it)). I also thought of a dial-up modem (the staying dormant and noise),a computer virus (dormant and needing to ask a doctor for help in another context), and a keyboard (makes noise when you press keys and stays dormant otherwise).

Edit: On the other hand...

A firewall? Your computer's screwed if it retires, it stops working but is reborn by "fire"/viruses, it enjoys/must/"is born" (I guess) from killing viruses, and it stops viruses- which (in another context) are cured by doctors. Or electricity (I know someone guessed lightning but didn't see electricity)- reborn by fire (generated from steam), doesn't stop working, etc.

So it has something to do with wire, microchips and possibly bombs.

Is it a detinator?

If not is it a type of microchip that could be found in a bomb?

No.

an electron

copper

No and no.

is "dumb" to be interpreted as "stupid" or "mute" or both or neither?

Neither.... if you read my clues, you see the first half of the second stanza uses wordplay.

I like this riddle

I'm stuck on "together yet separate" being a sum of its parts. My guess is a network.

Good thought, and good guess. It could be considered one of those.

No, and no, and no, and no to the first.

No and no to the second.

A Processor.

Together yet separate, _---A Computer and Its Processor, Sum of its Parts

I never can retire; ----Need a processor to use a computer at all.

For though I may stop working, ---stuff breaks, ya know? or shut down

I am reborn by fire.--- Booting up again, electricity.

(Processors work by four commands - fetch, decode, execute, and writeback when taken metaphorically, it fits the next 4 lines.)

Conceived by one not dumb, Fetch - It takes info from the computer

And born by killing another, Decode - It "kills" the original code and makes it understandable to the computer/

I am perfected by the noise, Execute - the "noise" of transferring the data and carrying it out.

Though I never had a mother. Writeback - It reports to itself, not the "mother". (the whole concieved, mother and born thing seems to be a play on words)

You might use intelligence,----INTEL Processor

While others ask a doctor. ----AMD Processor

Gosh am I close at all? I feel totally farfetched. :P
