Question

Here is a riddle that is sorta easy but lest see what you think:

Said a certain young lady named Gwen,

Of her tally of smitten young men,

"One less and three more, divided by four,

together gives one more than ten."

How many boys is Gwen dating??? (and cheating on?)

42 guys

you have to work backwards:

one more than 10 (1+10) is 11. because you divde in the problem, you must multiply. 11 X 4 = 44. then there's the 'one less and three more...' bacicly you had to add two to get there, so you subtract two to go back. The End!!!

I read the riddle a little differently:

(One less) and (three more, divided by four)

together gives one more than ten

So:

(x-1) + ((x+3)/4) = 11

Which is true for x=9, so 9 boys!

I still think it's too much ;)

Lets try that again - it is 21 for sure

10+1= [(x-1)+(x+3)]/4

where x-1 is one less and x+3 is three more

11=[2x+2]/4

44=2x+2

42=2x

21=x

Got my formula turned around earlier - was thinking one more three less...

21 guys => one less would be 20, three more would be 24, thus one less and one more would be 44. Divided by four is 11 which is the same as 10 and one more.
