Are we to assume that the very common item is an actually common item, that everyone might have (thus being a legal item)?

Are the dollar amounts relevant to the solution (could it have been 2 dollars and $2mil)?

Is the man an officer of the law?

There are many possible solutions, so we need to narrow down the one wanted.

Could it be that she bought an item in one country (Mexico, Russia) for a low price, and had to pay an import fee? (this happened to someone I know, they tried importing some Vodka from Russia into Finland, and get a heavy fine)

Is the "very common item" important?

That what she bought was worth exactly what she paid for it, but the man thought it was worth alot more, she let him into her life and he robbed her accts blind

nope

Bad woman

That she bought a condom, and the man (her husband) found out and filed a divorce... That ended up costing $20,000 +

Just a wild guess!!! ;)

nope, but it was her fault

try and narrow down the possibles with questions instead of trying to solve on first try?

ok.....

is it easy??

kind of it took me and my class about fifteen twenty minutes.

small class about 20 kids

Is she somehow related to the man???

nope no relation

Yeah.....does a man have to do with this??

if so, does he betray her in some odd way??

he just tells on her besides that he's just a random stranger

I was going to say the condom/divorce...

was the common item that she bought actually worth $1?

was losing the $20,000 a penalty?

I am thinking that it could also be along the lottery line that someone mentioned..

her and her husband were divorcing, and she bought a ticket and won $40,000 +, but he found out so he still go half so essentially she lost that $20,000, even though she still did infact gain $20,000 at the same time???
