What is the solution of this teasers

Crossing the Desert

A military car carrying an important letter must cross a desert. There is no petrol station in the desert, and the car’s fuel tank is just enough to take it half way across. There are other cars with the same fuel capacity that can transfer their petrol to one another. There are no canisters or rope to tow the cars.

How can the letter be delivered?

Solution to "Crossing the Desert"

There are 4 cars needed, including the car with the important letter (which travels to the middle of the desert). Its empty tank must be filled to the top to get to the end of desert. The way between the military base (where the cars and petrol is) and the middle of the desert can be divided into 3 thirds. 3 cars will go in their thirds back and forth and overspilling 1/3 of their tanks. This way the tank of the important car will be filled and the letter will be delivered.

Apologies, the thread with solution and discussion is missing due to technical issues.

Looks like you're using fewer cars as an optimum response to the need of crossing the desert, when you should be using the apparently unlimited supply of cars and gas to get the letter across the desert as quickly as possible. Time is always the senior consideration. Here's how I would try to do it: With eight cars full of gas, one with letter, go to 1/4 the distance, empty four tanks into the other four, and go another 1/4, empty two into the other two, go the third 1/4, empty the one into the other, carrying the letter, and make it to the other side. You did one fill from the 'home depot', three fuel transfer operations in the desert, and spent no time waiting in the desert for the rest of your gas. The mission would be accomplished in a minimum of time, and that is probably the most important aspect.
