Who were those masked men?

Question

A variation on the Lone Ranger theme:

A man left home one day and began to run. After he'd gone a ways, he turned left and kept running. A bit later he turned left again and ran a little faster. Later on, he turned left a final time and ran even faster than before.

In the distance he saw two masked men.

Who were they?

One of them was not the Lone Ranger.

How could it be a Catcher and a Umpire, The riddle says he turned left, in baseball you turn right, and even if you did turn left the riddle also says in the distance, if he was back at home, the Catcher and the Umpire would be right next to the man.

I've heard this before...

The catcher and the umpire

And for divinityman, you do turn left in baseball as you run around the bases.

Neither being the lone ranger - then it's Batman and Robin
Holly baseball bats
:P I have no idea! could be batman and robin out to play

LIS Don't mean to rain on your holiday parade but to get to the bat cave you need to go right -left- right-left. Watch the show. The cave will only open for the bat mobile.

There is a shortcut akaslickster, turn right at McDonald's - -this applies to all short cuts

Note, if in UK all short cuts are left at McDonald's, if in Italy use a mini and go up and sown stairs and over roof tops, basically anything in town off road will do in Italy.
