How many of each number there are.

3112 - two 1's,one 2,one 3 = 211213, the next step. I'd do it all out but I don't see the point.

Clever how it ends, though you probably should have waited to post the solution.

Pretty similar to another one I saw here

I am aware of the other simular puzzle that posted but that one can go on forever. The point here is that it ends. That puzzle did inspire this one.

Any way of finding that last number besides just writing it out until you hit it?

Not that I know of, maybe the fact that the second number is alway a one the forth alway a two the sixth alway a three and the eight alway a four might help find another method. ( can't see how)
