football

two armies = two teams

make noise when collide = helmets banging

one general controls both fates = quarterback dictating whether his team scores/loses ball

two states = winner or loser

Volleyball?

I think ...

soccer fits more appropriately ...

The teams <==> as armies

The referee as the general

(it would have been nice had there been two colonels for the linesmen :P )

Then winning or losing ...

Good guesses, but the sports answers are out because the referee is not analogous to the general, that would be the coach(es). As for the kid playing with army men, this doesn't do it for me, though it is a terrific guess. It doesn't really fit the 4th line. If you want, you can consider it an answer, but there is a much more appropriate answer.

I don't see how that works at all so I just ignored it :D If you want to explain how it works, feel free, and maybe you can get some secondary kudos ;)

Two armies (bride's family/groom's family)

noise at collision (cheers for kissing)

one general/controls both fates (priest/person who is gateway for getting married)

leave them in two states (state of married/not married)

Yeah, I figured that a couple minutes after I posted that I had no idea what you were getting at B)) This answer is pretty good, but for the "general" part, it's really the people getting married who "control their fates". They are the ones who have to say "I do." If the priest won't perform the ceremony then I guess he won't get paid and they'll find another priest. If the father of the bride or someone like that says no, then they can always have a rebellious secret wedding without him. It's a better guess than I gave it credit for though.
