I’ve stolen more than any other person,

Been caught plenty of times too,

But no one has ever prosecuted me,

Even though my theft they knew.

I’ve stolen all around the country

And many places I am reviled.

Born in Chicago, a Christmas baby,

But Oakland grew up a child.

Oakland was where I stole my first;

Los Angeles my last.

One year on May Day: “I am the greatest!”

And am still unsurpassed.

Besides my thefts for how I’m known

I’ve got more skills than that.

More than anyone I started things with a blast

And just smiled and tipped my hat.

Other thing where I’m the best?

Well, no doubt my eyes are great!

I’ve walked the most; I’ve run the most

I know how to create.

“Who is this thief?” you may want to ask

I don’t know why you’re puzzled.

I used to say my own name so much

People wished I had a muzzle.

Egotistical? Probably.

But I always got it done.

after the first paragraph, only I didn't know his name. I am not an avid fan of baseball, but that is what came to mind first when I read it. I did go ahead and read the rest of the spoilers and then googled his name, so I am pretty confident that Nikyma is correct with Ricky Henderson.
