Angie had half of 18 oranges. She cut them in halves, then in quarters. How many slices of oranges are there now?

She has 36 slices. First, she had 9 oranges. She cut those in half, then into quarters. I assume you mean each orange in now cut into four pieces. 9*4=36 slices.

on how one reads the question.

If Angie cut the 9 oranges into halves and cut those halves into quarters , then the total number of slices would be 72 .

If Angie cut the 9 oranges into halves and further split the halves into half(quarters of original pieces) , then total number of slices would be 36 .

I would go with 72. ;)
