Question

See if you can figure out the pattern of these sequences. Depending on the first number, it will always come back to 2...or will it? I can't tell if this pattern has to go to repeating 2s forever or not; would love if someone could prove that.

Start with a 2.

Sequence = 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, .....

Start with a 6.

Sequence = 6, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, ....

Start with a 9

Sequence = 9, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, .....

Start with a 24

Sequence = 24, 8, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, ....

Start with a 42

Sequence = 42, 6, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, ....

Start with a 100

Sequence = 100, 9, 3, 2, 2, 2, ....

Start with a 101

Sequence = 101, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, ...

Start with a 360

Sequence = 360, 24, 8, 4, 3, 2, 2, ....

What is the pattern of all of these sequences? If you need help, post a couple of numbers to start with, and I'll be happy to give you the pattern for that starting number.

100 is the number. No tricks with words.

10 is 10, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2.....

11 is 11, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2...

12 is 12, 6, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2...

1 is 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, ...

So, there is a sequence that doesn't always end in 2.

0 and -1 don't have sequences. This sequence solely works with natural numbers (positive integers).

Start with a 24

Sequence = 24, 8, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, ....

Start with a 42

Sequence = 42, 6, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, ....

It looks the number of factors .... lets start with 24.

Factors of 24 are {1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24} ==>8.

Factors of 8 = {1, 2, 4, 8} ==>4.

Factors of 4 = {1, 2, 4} ==>3.

Factors of 3 = {1, 3} ==>2.

Factors of 2 = {1, 2} ==>2. ...

It works for all the numbers but 42. The sequence starting with 42 would be 42, 8, 4, 3, 2, 2, ...

CORRECT! Sorry about the 42 (being the meaning to life, the universe, and everything, I got so excited writing it that I messed up).

Start with a 24

Sequence = 24, 8, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, ....

Start with a 42

Sequence = 42, 6, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, ....

It looks the number of factors .... lets start with 24.

Factors of 24 are {1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24} ==>8.

Factors of 8 = {1, 2, 4, 8} ==>4.

Factors of 4 = {1, 2, 4} ==>3.

Factors of 3 = {1, 3} ==>2.

Factors of 2 = {1, 2} ==>2. ...

It works for all the numbers but 42. The sequence starting with 42 would be 42, 8, 4, 3, 2, 2, ...
