# Thinking of a Number

## Question

I am thinking of a number. The number, if spelled out in English, is nine letters long. Exactly 5 of these 9 letters are vowels (a, e, i, o or u).

What is the number?

If you count "y" (which in this case is a vowel): eighty-one

But you didn't have "y" listed, so I'm guessing not...

No "Y" at all in the number.

curious as to how obscure these are or even the pronunciation allowed for these. Here are some examples of what I would consider "valid", but probably not what you're looking for:

Spoiler

π/1 = "pi over one"

1.1 = "one dot one"

0.0 = "oh point oh"

So it really comes down to what "words" or "interpretations" are allowed here? Are greek letters allowed? are "non-standard" pronunciations of digits allowed? What about mathematical symbols?

The number I am thinking  of is specific, one word and familiar to everyone.

Puzzles are funny things. You never know who will solve what.

I work in a grocery store, and we had our staff Christmas party yesterday. Just for fun, I posed this riddle to the group, explaining how it had been sitting unsolved here for weeks.

It did not take long for someone there to give the correct answer. Puzzles are funny things. You never know who will solve what.

Some hints:

The number does not contain a "T"

The number does not contain an "S"

I e-mailed this riddle to my sister, a computer science professor and math specialist, and she could not solve it. Finally I had to tell her the answer. So the next day she asked some of her students in class the same riddle, and they got it rather quickly. Puzzles are funny things.  I guess you never know who will solve what.

Is it "nine letters long"?  The number doesn't have T or S, it has 5 vowels and consists of 9 different letters.

Per the riddle, the vowels must be among a, e, i, o, and u.

The number I am thinking of has no "Y."

Mind telling us (or PMing me) the answer? as it has been 6 months with no correct answers and the participation seems to have dwindled...

Good answer. But the number I am thinking of is not from another language. It is English.
