# Funny Equation

## Question

In a classroom of standard of VIII somebody wrote an equation on a blackboard ; to the left of the equal sign is one symbol, and to the right three symbols. A boy remarked that if the symbol to the left of the equal sign were inverted and one of the three symbols to the right were erased, the equation would still be true and it contains no redundant or unnecessary symbols. What is the equation?

(The line in a fraction counts as a symbol)

2 = 4 - 2

(or something similar)

Inverting the 2 on the left and removing the 4 makes it

-2 = -2

6 = SIX ?

I started with the left side. IMHO, the only symbols that can be reversed are operators (I do not believe i.e. that -8 is reversed 8).

Just that there cannot be an operator alone.

Any other idea?

"inverted", not "reversed"

9 = 3 + 6

9=3**2 - I count ** (exponentiation) as one symbol

6=3*2

When I re-read, I realised my solution above didn't conform to the OP. Like harey, I have errrm "iffy" solutions

6=3x2 becomes

9=3^2 erasing half a symbol

or

6=3*2 becomes

9=32

However, I fear that our setter just aint bothered any more
