Food For Thought

Question

These multi-celled hosts hold the key to life's rejections
Puts them down for all to see, but can they make corrections?

A sixth sense's what i got, gives a good impression
Hard pressed to make the cut, or cease all expression

They're commonly portrayed in these parts its safe to say
As all they're meant to be in performing the same way

Packs quite a wallop, when one really sings
Motions to give the shaft, certain body rings

Often just for grins, on the subject they shed light
And I for example give support outright

A one time dodge, yet on target I should stay
Flits back and forth, then stunningly falls prey

Preserves and conserves, though hardly puts on the brakes
Gets in a tight spot, then fixes, their mistakes

In exchange for the seven solved, I offer this great deal
For those that still remain, giving thanks for certain we'll

afraid I've forgotten mine - sorry for the delayed response. fear we're veering off the established theme. think fabpig's #23 is still closest yet. do see the path from that answer to your latest, Wilson. just not the one needed. might be possible to work backwards from the final answer to get this one - not sure.

guess you're about ready to put this one to rest. alas, not those but good to hear you're in it 'til the end. wanted to have a rewrite along with this reply but haven't quite been satisfied with what ive got thus far. y'all are still not far off and may get it before I can come up with a better clue.

Afraid I'm not doing you justice here my friend.

rest

nope, that wasn't a hint, just a play on your previous response.

type(s)

close again from the other direction. perhaps combining the two?

rewrite:

For certain parts of speech, they're commonly portrayed

Some just acting out, behaviors aptly displayed

that is indeed a fine answer. fits both the direction established in posts #23 and #31 as well as the last 1/4 of the couplet as in post #34 (especially with the original version). so very close to the answer needed am ashamed to say you still need another. but you're right there.

EDIT: in rereading post #23, it similarly fits the last 1/4 of the couplet as well - rats

hey hey DD - indeed great to see you here. did not fully think this one out re the many synonyms/near synonyms that fit both directions of the clue. your first definitely falls in that category. usually try to put some clue that makes the answer more definitive. thought the two directions to be enough. oops. the next one in the wings is better I promise. thanks you guys for staying with it.
