Question

Hello Guys, below is an another set of interesting puzzle. Though this time it requires little mathematics to solve but time allowed is just 5 minutes for all of 5 questions below.

TIP: Solving on a paper using Pen is good, Oral calculation is bit faster but calculating in mind is the fastest. And once you are expert in doing calculations in mind, you will be definitely an above average mathematician.

1. A clock loses exactly ten minutes every hour. If the clock is set correctly at noon, what is the correct time when the clock reads 3:00pm?

2. If a bottle and a cork cost a dollar and a nickel, and the bottle costs a dollar more than the cork, how much does the cork cost?

3. Perform this calculation in your head, mentally adding the numbers as quickly as you can. Start with 1000 and add 40. Now add 1000. Add 30 to that, then add another 1000. Now add 20 to that result. Add another 1000 and finally, add 10 to that. What is the total?

4. You have four chains. Each chain has three links in it. Although it is difficult to cut the links, you wish to make a single loop with all 12 links. What is the fewest number of cuts you must make to accomplish this task?

5. An explorer wishes to cross a barren desert that requires 6 days to cross, but one man can only carry enough food for 4 days. What is the fewest number of other men required to help carry enough food for him to cross?

Please note down your answers and put here in spoilers.

1. 3:36 [216 minutes]

2. 2.5 cents

3. 4100

(i think)

Also, for number 4: in order to connect two links, do both links have to be cut open or just one?

good work on first three... you are a rare person if you have got correct answer for ques 4 in one go.

And for 4, I think no additional information required.

I sure my other are okay.

But looking at 5. I can get down to 2 men

One man goes out a distance of one day leave two day food there and returns.

Second man goes a two day distance, picking up one extra day food on the way.

He leaves two day food there and returns picking up the one day food on the way.

the explorer then can make it across picking up the two days food on the way.

1) 3:36

2) 25 cents

3) 4100

4) 3 cuts

5) 1 extra person

Explanation for 5:

2 men leave on the first day, each with 4 days of food. on the second day, one man gives the other 2 days of food and returns with his remaining 1 day of food. Since the second man had 3 days of food, and was given 2 days of food, he now has 5 days of food. Since he only has 5 days remaining to travel, he can finish the trip.

I had thought of that but...

For 50 min unreal time = real time is 60 min. So for 180 min unreal time = real time is 60/50 * 180 = 216 min. 216 min = 3hr.36min.

A cork generally comes free with the bottle. However if the bottle with cork costs a dollar and a nickel then cork should cost 1/2 nickeland the bottle without cork will cost a doolar and 1/2 nickel.

Cut all three links of one chain, and join remaining three chains with the help of these thee links to make a loop.

Two other men will be requied, all will carry four day food with them. After one day journey each of the three men will consume one day food. So on helper will give one day food to theexplorer and the other helper, and taking one day food along with him, he will return. After further one day journey again one dy food will be consumed by the explorer and the helper each. Helper will give one day food to the explorer, so explorer will have now four day food and the helper will return with the balance two day food with him. Now explorer has four days to cross the desert and has four days food with him.
