My first thought is that your friend can send you a lock that s/he has the key for.

That is probably too obvious, so this is a partial answer.

I would lock the keyring onto a padlock.

can't your friend just break your lock...?

just kidding

you need to lock it, send it to him, he should add another lock and send it back to you.

you need to remove your's and then send it to him.

now he can open his lock.

that way both of you know that the box wasn't compromise.

I assume that a key alone can't be sent in an open mail. Also the problem states that the box has a locking ring "big enough for a

lock and not a number of locks.

This prevents your friend locking the box with his own lock and sending it back, which seems to be the popular answer.

there are chances that someone will steal both the mails

...

but that also means no matter how we solve this puzzle even if we got it right, there will always be someone who will steal our mail =_="

Okay assuming it is a wacky puzzle...

Put the object in the box.

Make a trip to your friend's mailbox and put the box inside.

(Optional) Stay and keep watch.

or assuming this puzzle is actually talking about a virtual mail...

Put the valuable inside a zipped file(box).

Secure the zipped file using an encryption(lock) algorithm.

Attach the zipped file to an email and mail it.

Sms the key to decrypt the zipped file to your friend so he/she can open it.

no... even if he steals the mail you should be able to protect the mail with the lock.. in your case the thief would have both the lock and key

your second solution is not valid if your friend is far away

Its not concerned to an email

dark_magician_92 has given the right answer... you can check that if you are confused

Use a combination lock. It doesn't say you have to send a key. When your friend calls to find out whats up w/ the box, you give him the combination.
