Question

Four friends go out on an evening stroll with a dog whose leash

has broken and it starts running. jimmy is directly behind the dog.

kate is behind jimmy. cathy is behind Ruby.

peter is ahead of the dog walking down the

street in the opposite direction. As the children

and dog pass, peter turns around and

joins the pursuit. He runs in behind kate.

jimmy runs faster and is alongside the dog on

the left. kate runs faster and is alongside the

dog on the right. Which child is directly

behind the dog?

If we consider all "behind" as "directly behind", then initial configuration is: C(Cathy), R(Ruby), K(Kate), J(Jimmy), D(Dog), P(Peter) which becomes: C R P K J D after Peter joins them and then becomes: C R P (KJD together). Hence answer would be Peter.

If all "behind' are not "directly behind", there can be several initial configuration like: (K C R J D P) or (C K R J D P) or (C R K J D P). and depending on this answer can be either Peter or Ruby.

(I hope none of the names given here is of the dog itself to create more confusion. :P)

If Peter is one of the original friends who is out to walk the dog (he could be meeting them hence why in the other direction), i would then say that Ruby or Cathy would in fact be the dog and as they are walking the dog i am going for Ruby being the dog so Cathy being the child directly behind the dog.

Just another way to look at things :-)

Is it not Peter since it says in the riddle that he turns around and joins in the pursuit behind Kate who afterwards runs faster to be alongside the dog on the right and the other three (peter cathy and ruby) do not change dierection or speed so they stay in the same order meaning that Peter is behind the Dog....

...However, if Peter is one of the four friends who went out, we could assume that he walked with them before going in front, for instance, he ran ahead to get something from a shop before it closed. Now lets say that our friend Peter came out of the shop after the leash had broken, he is still in front and walks towards them when he realises this so he joins the pursuit behind Kate. Kate and Jimmy run faster so we could still assume that It is Peter behind the dog but we could also assume that Ruby is the Dog and Cathy is the youngest child who falls behind and Peter goes in front of her to help catch the dog :)

Four "friends" (1 dog & 3 humans) go out. Leash breaks & dog (whose name could be any of them, at this point) runs. Jimmy is directly behind dog ("J" can't be dog's name). Kate is behind "J" (so "K" can't be dog's name). Knowing then that either Cathy or Ruby is the dog's name, it states that "C" is behind "R". My configuration at this point is ® © (J) (K). Therefore "Cathy" is the dog's name because J is "directly" behind the dog & C is behind "R". Then Peter passes them & joins in putting him at the end. "J" runs up to the left Cathy, the dog & "K" runs up to the right; "P" is then the one directly behind.

There were a lot of replies without spoilers :(:blush: so now it doesn't make sense to use spoiler in this post..

-Four friends are human beings not 1 dog and 3 friends..so plz dont take it too seriously

-and yes.. peter is the one "Directly behind" the dog as many of you have already found out.
