Question

A friend of mine asked me this problem. I haven't yet found the answer to it.

There is a 40 kg weight with a grocerer, he wants to break it into 4 pieces such that he can measure all weights starting from 1 to 40. Can you say which are these four weights ?We have to measure only whole number weights i.e only 1,2, 3....39,40.

I had some more time, so I put together this table showing how to weigh any whole number of kg between 1 and 40 with just those 4 weights (1kg,3kg,9kg,27kg). The weight to be measured would go on the left side and the weights would go according to this table.

?	Left	Right

-	1

1	3

-	3

-	1+3

1+3	9

3	9

3	1+9

1	9

-	9

-	1+9

1	3+9

-	3+9

-	1+3+9

1+3+9	27

3+9	27

3+9	1+27

1+9	27

9	27

9	1+27

1+9	3+27

9	3+27

9	1+3+27

1+3	27

3	27

3	1+27

1	27

-	27

-	1+27

1	3+27

-	3+27

-	1+3+27

1+3	9+27

3	9+27

3	1+9+27

1	9+27

-	9+27

-	1+9+27

1	3+9+27

-	3+9+27

-	1+3+9+27
