Question

A man died and left his three sons 15 pots.

5 filled with honey.

5 with olive oil.

and 5 with red wine.

How can you devide these pots between them fairly,knowing that:-

1- price of one pot honey =price of 1.5 pots olive oil.

2- price of one pot olive oil =price of two pots red wine.

There are many ways to divide them up fairly.

To start, find value of pots. If oil = 2 wine and honey = 1.5 oil, then honey = 3 wine. For ease of calculation, I will assign wine a value of 1, so oil = 2 and honey = 3. With 5 pots of each, total values are 15 for honey, 10 for oil, and 5 for wine, combined for 30 for all pots. So each should recieve something that totals a value of 10. For my solution I decided that they should also each recieve at least one pot of each type.

1 recieves 1 honey, 3 olive oil, 1 red wine, total value 3+6+1=10

2 recieves 2 honey, 1 olive oil, 2 red wine, total value 6+2+2=10

3 recieves 2 honey, 1 olive oil, 2 red wine, total value 6+2+2=10

Starting amounts:

5 - rw (red wine)

5 - oo (olive oil)

5 - hy (honey)

1 hy = 1.5 oo

1 oo = 2 rw

5 rw = 5 rw

5 oo = 5*2 rw = 10 rw

5 hy = 1.5*2*5 rw = 15 rw

tot = 30 rw eq

split out as 10 rw each

1 hy = 3 rw

1 oo = 2 rw

1 rw = 1 rw

3 hy + 1 rw = 9 rw + 1 rw = 10 rw

2 hy + 2 oo = 6 rw + 4 rw = 10 rw

3 oo + 4 rw = 6 rw + 4 rw = 10 rw

Give one set to each son:

3 pots of honey and 1 pot of red wine

2 pots of honey and 2 pots of olive oil

3 pots of olive oil and 4 pots of red wine

If each should receive 5 pots, then:

2 pots of honey, 1 pot of olive oil and 2 pots of red wine

2 pots of honey, 1 pot of olive oil and 2 pots of red wine

1 pot of honey, 3 pots of olive oil and 1 pot of red wine

(same as Nana7's answer)

wine has an ultimate scenario value of 1 double that is OO has the value of 2 and honey value 1.5 times OO valued at 3

3*5 + 2*5 +1*5 total thirty. assigning the same value back each boy needs value of 10. There are probably at least 3 or 4 combinations without splitting any jars contents. Otherwise each boy would get 5/3 of a jar of each but they would have to break out some empty jars so that they dont start making some weird oily wine. ;-)

i converted them all in oil units..

1 Honey = 1.5 Oil

1 Oil = 1 Oil

2 Wine = 1 Oil OR 1 Wine = 0.5 Oil

and if each of them gets 5 plots...

1st = 3 Honey + 1 Wine ~[(3*1.5)+(1*0.5)] = 5

2nd = 1 Honey + 3 Oil + 1 Wine ~[(1*1.5)+(3*1)+(1*0.5)] = 5

3rd = 1 Honey + 2 Oil + 2 Wine ~[(1*1.5)+(2*1)+(2*2)] = 7.5

Best answer balances pots and contents value.

First son, 1 Olive Oil+2 Honey +2 Red Wine. Second son exact same. Third son gets remaining, 3 Olive Oils+1Honey+1 Red Wine. Each now has equal contents value and 5 pots for use after they are empty!
