when the year is rotated 180 degrees, the year is still the same.

The digit 1, sans serif and without the bottom short horizontal line, is a vertical line, thus it can appear the same when inverted. In most typefaces, an inverted 6 looks like a 9 and vice versa, Thus, 1961, in some typefaces has 180-degree rotational symmetry.

Yet, since the digits must depend on the typeface or how one prints or scripts the digits, 1961 might not appear the same inverted. And depending on the typeface, especially one that that mimics a digital display, both the 2 [two] and 5 [five] can also appear the same inverted. Therefore the next year that may appear the same as when inverted is 2002 -- only 41 years later and not 4000+ years later.

Thus, if rotational symmetry is the answer, then the complete answer would be "In some typefaces, the next year to appear inverted is 6009, which is 4048 years later."
