A Mutual Understanding

Question

Posted · Report post

Again there are seven, one word answers to name

Then a final one as always, never found quite the same

As a point of order you stand just above

Schooled in a manner more superior guv

A judgement call when temperatures rise

Down to the minute, intelligent's prize

In this situation, you might recognize me

Put it another way, here's where it'll be

Even on the surface, it may seem to bedevil

Yet you know that this story is on the level

With beans and cheese 'twas previously served

And in theory that matter hasn't gone unobserved

A determined quality, to replace in kind

Any form of schooling, if I be so inclined

Something one's father knows, can nary be beat

Nothing's better than that, even if in defeat

There's two ways to discover that which you need know

Thence just a short while 'fore the final answer is so

fwiw - some similar ones from before

DEGREES

A degree is the relative extent, amount, intensity, or level of something, especially when compared with other things, i.e., a judgement call

A degree is also a unit of measurement for temperature, thus a judgement call when temperatures rise

A degree is a unit of angular measurement equal to 1/360 of a circle, a minute is a unit of angular measurement equal to 1/60 of a degree, hence down to the minute

A degree is also an honor or title awarded by a university or college following the successful completion of a course of study, thus intelligent's prize

FLOOR

A floor is synonymous with ground, which in turn is synonymous with the surface of the earth.

To floor someone is to baffle or bewilder them -- i.e., bedevil.

Even on the surface, it may seem to bedevil

A story is a floor or level in a building.

Yet you know that this story is on the level

BEST

"Father Knows Best" was an American radio then television comedy series in the 1940s.

Something one's father knows, can nary be beat

Best can mean better than all others.

Best, as a verb, means to gain an advantage over or defeat an opponent.

Nothing's better than that, even if in defeat

MOLE

A spicy Mexican sauce made with chocolate and a variety of chilies and spices.

With beans and cheese 'twas previously served(?)

A basic International System unit of amount of a substance equal to the amount containing the same number of

elementary units as the number of atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12.

And in theory that matter hasn't gone unobserved

ahh, clever. guess you know i'm not above sneaking in a homophone now and again. not this time, tho. this one's a little more cryptic; a form you are familiar with I suspect, due to one of your previous responses to One, Two, Red, Blue. (gotta finish that one btw)

GRADE

A level of quality or importance; a letter or number that shows the quality of a student's work.

a determined quality

To separate things into different groups according to quality, size, importance, etc.

to replace in kind

In the United States, one of the levels of school that lasts one year

any form of schooling

The gradient of a slope or road or other surface

if I be so inclined

Not only could it be but meant to be. Another nice solve Dej Mar.

SCALE

Of the words so far discovered, if word #6 was in word #5's position, each of the words begin with the letter symbolizing a note correspondig to its position in the C Major Scale:

(1) C ?

(2) D : DEGREE

(3) E ?

(4) F : FLOOR

(6) G : GRADE

(5) A ?

(7) B : BEST

The words, "degree", "floor", "grade", and "best" are also terms related to the word "scale".

There's two ways to discover that which you need know

Thence just a short while 'fore the final answer is so

The last word of the clue, "so", is also the fifth syllablic note in the tonic sol-fa.

If correct, the last three may be easier to solve.

real sensical but strictly coincidental here.

Though the SCALE connection may have been coincidental with four of the clue answers, with the additional answers (if they are correct, and possibly still, if not) each do begin with a different letter of the first seven letters of the alphabet:

1 A : AHEAD

2 D : DEGREE

3 C : CITE

4 F : FLOOR

5 E : ENCHILDA

6 G : GRADE

7 B : BEST

Really like benjer3 and Wilson's responses for 3. They certainly fit well. Was hoping that "recognize" bit would better specify the answer for this clue. fabpig has my intended for this one. And Wilson's answer for 1. is really clever. Not mine tho am afraid. Starting to think this one may be a bit vague. At least the first line. I think I've seperated each different approach to the answers within the individual clues with commas. Had a comma after "manner" in this first one but could go either way I think. Am still liking clue 5. and think it's fair. Need to find a different key word to concentrate on and maybe the rest will follow.

hey t_l - got to say no. that first line of the first one is still illusive to all. could be considered a triple entendre? do like the bean curd/tofu response.
