You simply have to make a bet that you are certain to win with the 19th person you come across. The amount of the bet is a $20 bill.

Therefore, you have taken 1 from 19 and got 20 without having to give it back.

The object is to get to the number 20 without having to put the 1 back in.

Therefore:

19 - 1 = 18

18 + 2 = 20

2 ¬= 1
