5...a man, his wife, their 2 kids (one son, one daughter) who married each other (ewww...) and their son

4: 2 women and 2 men.

Explanation:

2 fathers: both men have children (somewhere)

2 mothers: both women have children (somewhere)

2 sons: the men have to be sons of someone

1 father-in-law: One of the father's children is married.

1 mother-in-law: One of the women's children is married

1 daughter-in-law: One of the women is married.

1 grandfather: One of the men has a grandchild

1 grandmother: One of the women has a grandchild

1 grandson: This is the questionable part. Since both men are grandsons of somebody, I'm not sure how there can be just 1 grandson.

Five.

A married couple, their son, his father and her mother.

Now I've read Elightened's post.

He has a better answer.

In fact, following his reasoning the puzzle could be made a lot tougher:

Two grandmothers, two grandfathers, two grandsons, two granddaughters,

two great grandsons, two great granddaughters, etc... ;)

I would say 5,

Grandfather (f) (f-in-law) -- Grandmother (m) (m-in-law)

\ /

Father (son) - - Mother (daughter-in-law)

\ /

son (grandson)

Just a clarification. All the relationships are within the people attending the family party. It should be included in the original post, but I thought it is obvious.

Total members = 5.

Grandfather(father)(father in law)<-------->Grandmother(mother)(mother in law)

| | \

| | \

Father(son)<--->mother(daughter in law)

| |

Son(grandson)
