"sprung from great strife" can be started smoking from stress. "losing my breath" is self explanatory with regards to smoking. "i'm certain of death when i observe the masses" many people in the world tend to smoke. the next stanza is self explanatory describing the negative effects of smoking and the hint stanza, "some would just have me burned" could be a personification of a cigarette it's self? "claim what you've earned" could refer to cancer? and the hint with "stopping your heart" and "choking your mind" could be second hand smoke? I dono, it's far fetched, but it makes sense.
