OK Thalia when you come up with your rule can you advise which of the following would get thro the GGDs:

insipid

jeroboam

tyranny

yachts

cipher

vitriol

rhizome

yoghurt

echidna

radii

pious

spiel

ideal

igloo

ovoid

potoo

gypsy

buoys

coypu

young

About my rule:No knowledge of a language other than English will be needed for this one. Actually, I think language rules are irrelevant. That being said, these make it through:

insipid

tyranny

vitriol

rhizome

yoghurt

echidna

radii

pious

spiel

ideal

igloo

ovoid

potoo

gypsy

buoys

coypu

young

To try to refine Perry's rule:

sheik shake shaking milkshake

mills windmills

house workhouse outhouses

sheik

shake

shaking

mills

house

The words that have an odd number of letters get through. If the word is compound, then both of the words should have an odd number of letters to get through.

:)

Nope.

Based on the theory that we are making it too complicated:

seven fiver letters through

six nine even threesome et cetera rejected

:D

I'm not quite sure I understood that. If you are saying that multiples of 3 and even numbers are rejected, that is true (except for 3) but that is not the rule. Five and 7 letter words will get through but it is not just those. Dichotomous will pass.

Edit: I just realized I forgot to post my example last time. Oops.

Sorry I was playing - I thought it was only 5 & 7 letter words that were getting through. I will try to be less ambiguous next time.

I'll try another theory.

If the spoiler is wrong, can you determine which of these words get through...

contemporaneously (17) duct ( 4)

abbreviations (13) abduct ( 6)

abbreviated (11) abductee ( 8)

abridge ( 7) abduction ( 9)

seven ( 5) abbreviate (10)

six ( 3) abbreviation (12)

to ( 2) accomplishment (14)

i ( 1) algorithmically (15)

The number of letters in the word must be a prime number.

Close enough. I would have accepted a one letter word. As long as it is not a composite number. When you make up your rule here is a list of attempted words:

I'm very sorry I can't apply the rule that I had come up with flawlessly.

It would have been font specific which may not have worked properly across all operating systems - I'll get back to you with new results from a new rule a.s.a.p.

Did they all have straight vertical lines?

LOL - yes that is very nearly the rule - lower case height tho.

In checking I found that g, y, j vary considerably - I should have checked first.

By the way, I am NOT the very model of a modern Major-General. Feel free to take your time. :P

I'll maintain a list of ACCEPTANCES...

ACCEPTED

close waffle

letter stem

number panic

board

star

cave

Please don't make me feed all of 'G&S' through this filter.

I haven't filtered the quoted string... ...yet.

EDIT: Advice is that neither 'cartoon' nor 'item' can be accepted.
