Question

A singular toll calls the hunter to sea,

Whose venerable net to embrace

Both young and old, skittish or bold;

From the depths of the dark they would race.

And around the round once was a pound

To weigh down the workers’ weal,

And to ever make sure the veil of his word,

Opposed to those who would steal.

A short life to live and to one father give

The power to make others kneel

And offer their love to all things above,

Each pilot is handed this wheel.

No go. This one requires a very specific answer, sort of like Semper's attempts (god tries by the way)

Ex: "Jacob's ladder" for a specific rope ladder on a boat, not just ladder. I would have to say "no" to the latter ladder, otherwise I would pretty much give it away and make it an issue of just narrowing it down.

Pope== St. Peter was the fisher of men, and the fisherman's ring is one of the papal symbols. Also the crossed keys, which might represent entry to the "pound" or safehouse medieval villages had, or to the church

Holy Hell! Chick reels it in!

Fisherman's Ring worn by Pope

A singular toll calls the hunter to sea,

(A ring for the fisherman, as well as metaphor for St. Peters duty)

Whose venerable net to embrace

Both young and old, skittish or bold;

From the depths of the dark they would race.

(The net of Christianity to appease the fear of eternal death)

And around the round once was a pound

To weigh down the workers weal,

And to ever make sure the veil of his word,

Opposed to those who would steal.

(Around the rounded finger was a signet stamp for pounding down the bees waxwealth of the worker beesin order to seal envelopes that hide his correspondence and to safeguard personal letters)

A short life to live and to one father give

The power to make others kneel

And offer their love to all things above,

Each pilot is handed this wheel.

(Each Pope or Papa who steers the Vatican is given a newly crafted ring upon the death of the last and the old ring is destroyed, a short life considering the short reign of aged Popes. Monarchs and laity kneel and kiss the ring as a sign of veneration to church and God.)

Well done Ms. Chicory. You and Dudley and Wilson are making short work of my efforts. Time to double down perhaps? :dry:

Err.. What does double-down mean?

Great riddle, Shakee. I was totally off on the middle part, though- I never stopped thinking "human" workers. Funny how the mind can twist things to fit....:P
