  1. Nice going, Vist. The only reason I skipped over Lantern for #2 is that the GL oath is quoted at the start of the episode. There are a couple of things that confuse : "not be on this day" - there are "lantern day" celebrations in various parts of the world: and "ducks needn't be in a row" (sounds a bit like "arrow") Duck is also nickname/bingo name for "2" . I won't ask how you happen to know 23^5..... :P

    Aar, I think you're looking at #4

  2. Possibly 3rd stanza is Green Goblin - father of Spidey's best friend.

and the 3rd line of the 4th stanza would seem to point to Green Hornet, though the other references elude me. (Has "bloke" made it into everyday Amerglish? Or is it indicating a British male. Or is it, in this case, poetic licence?)

3rd line of stanza 2 might point (!) to Green Arrow. Again the rest is a bit of a mystery to me.

I wondered if the Queen reference might have something to do with the chessboard nature of the previous puzzle. But, generally, once a puzzle has been done, it doesn't seem to be referenced again.

    Deit....syntax and spelling

  3. Follow on from vista's work (spoilered to save space) and converted to 1-64 notation

  4. LoL How do you think all the 113 people can have same score and still have different ranks. Won't they all be having first rank if they had same score?

But the guy following would be 114th as he had 113 people ahead of him. But I just used those figures for ease. Working on a similar principle, you could have 1st on 1113 points, 2nd on 1112, 3rd on 1111......113th on 1001 pts. There would still be enough points to win comfortably.

    Edit....spelling

  5. .

But I do think that this is a good approach although I'm sort of hoping one of the programmers will just write an exhaustive search to find the right path...

I started to write a program, then realised there were 11139276598425944064000000000 possible combinations and my poor little Dell started smoking at the thought of it. Need to work out what Agatha Y-san means.

Did we ever work out what the 1|2|3|4 multipliers in the H & K puzzles were for?

  6. you can take the scoring to be exactly like that in Olympics and I dont see any way one could win if he finishes 114th in all events.

In event 1 (and in all events), our competitor finishes 114th with a score of 1000 points. Those ahead of him, pos 1-113 score 1001 points each (just for ease of maths).

In event 2, those that finished 1-17 in event 1 are disqualified and fill positions 115-131 with 0 points. All competitors move up 17 places from event 1

    And so on.

After just 8 events, all the other 130 competitors (<( 8*17)) have had at least 1 event with 0 points. Our man has 8000 points, nearest competitor has 7007 points.

And he's won at a canter. Dunno why the others turned up. :P

Yeah, it's never going to happen. Be nice if it did tho.

  7. grrrr, was writing up my failures and realized I had made a mistake and then found the answer. The actual sequence should be 28,31,48,21,18,42. I found a nice table for the Hiragana characters that was in "alphabetical order" and I used it to decode to Hu Ma N Na Tu Re -> Human Nature. I think this is probably the final answer.

I would think so. It makes a lot more sense than

    "RAW FISHING"

    Nicely done DD

  8. @DD - If the last number of the sequence could be 21, 28, 42, does that also apply to the 1st one? If so, FUMA NATSURI could be NAMA NATSURI. But Y-San seemed quite happy with your sequence....

For those having fun with the above links, this is a

found the Hiragana / Katakana charts and assigned numbers to the syllable sounds. The charts are in columns of 5 or 10, depending on website. It could be I'm counting across instead of down, it could also be that the number eg 28 means column 2 row 8 or vice-versa Or it could be I'm flying off at a tangent.

Incidentally, Google translate gives NAMA NATSURI as "RAW FISHING" !!

    Edit to correct my Japanese

  9. Here's what I got (not much, I'm afraid). Stop giggling, MoMa:

No spoilers (may as well make a fool of myself in the open). I was looking for a 6-letter shade of green that started and ended with the same letter. Discarded WILLOW because of the double LL.

Tried LAUREL and actually thought I was onto something when I substituted 28,31,48,21,18,28 with line/letter from Green Lantern Oath and got H,L,Y,N,T,H. 3 of the letters - L,R,L are +3 in the alphabet, U is -3. but the other 2 just don't fit. I bet you all thought of that anyway.

As for the paint brushes and the letters on the cartoons (I admit to knowing precisely 0 about GL so I had to Google): Kyle Rayner is an artist IRL. Could the H and K be initials of past or present names of GLC? And it seems the duo are mirror images of each other: it wouldn't take much imagination to mirror image K as Lambda (from Ep 1).

Like I said, not much. But there if you hadn't already thought of it and it's of any use to you.

  10. If by "their building" you mean the apartments where they live, then it is a fair assumption that people will indeed make about 50 percent of their journeys from the ground floor (I actually thought this, but discarded it when I read the proviso that all floors would have an equal number of calls).

If, however, it's an office block, it is quite possible that a person will take the lift elevator from the ground floor to their office on the (say) 5th floor, and then make several journeys during the day from the 5th floor to one or more of the other floors.........
