  1. 1 - One or two puzzles seem to have a wide variety of answers; some are a little off target and therefore appearing to iritate/agitate people. Perhaps the chance to rate a reply woluld give oppurtunity to vote without leaving distasteful or uninteresting comments. It would suit me, can't speak for others though.

NB I do like the discussions that follow some replies, but posting a 'well done' or 'good answer' is a bit cheezey - rating/voting answers seems better

You can rate each post now. Check the plus sign and minus sign in the bottom right corner of each post. Such positive/negative points contribute to overall Reputation of the rated member.

  2. Just following up on all comments/suggestions.

There is a way how OP can mark his/her threads as "Solved".

    NEW:

Topic starters can mark their new threads as solved if solution is posted. Follow these guidelines.

Riddle/Puzzle authors (or generally topic starters) may choose to show that their riddle/puzzle has been solved by changing it from a regular thread into a poll.

    1. After an acceptable solution has been posted, the topic starter posts a reply to confirm that the answer is correct (giving credits to solver/solvers, pointing to their posts and providing further explanation if needed). Before adding reply, the topic starter can first copy the hyperlink address - URL - to the post with the correct answer by clicking its number in the upper right corner of the post (eg. clicking on "#2" if that post includes the solution).

    2. When topic starter is writing reply ("Add reply"), he/she can click the option at the top of the editor: "Click here to manage this topic’s poll".

    3. The poll does not need to have a title, but the topic starter will need to click "Add Poll Question" and type something in the box "Poll Content" (eg. "Solved").

    4. Topic starter then needs to click "Add Poll Choice" and type something in the box that appears (like "Solved by plasmid in post #23" - tags can be used to point directly to the post with solution.) You can get a hyperlink address - URL - to the post with the correct answer by clicking its number in the upper right corner. You might want to copy the URL before you "Add Reply" so that you just paste it in this step. Then use that hyperlink in url tags like so:

    {url=http://brainden.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=9215&view=findpost&p=178754}this post{/url} ... replace {} for []

    5. Topic starter needs to enter the regular text for a reply posting as well.

    6. Click the button "Add Reply" in the full editor and that's it ;)

After the reply is posted, the riddle’s folder will be purple and the poll’s text ("Solved:") will appear at the top of the window when people view the thread. Be aware that after the poll has been made it cannot be edited, and people may still post to the thread after it is converted to a poll.

This is also mentioned as a TIP when you start new thread and, of course, in the Board Guidelines as well.

    Enjoy ;)

  3. This is a very good puzzle and Doctor Moshe gave the solution. Since it was posted almost 2 years ago, I will close this thread. Feel free to continue in if you have anything substantial to add. You can check page__view__findpost__p__9328.

    Thread locked.

  4. Something is wrong with this topic, I read the question as... (The captain of a big ship was telling this interesting story: "Once I saw two marines standing on the opposite sides of the ship. One was looking to the west and the other one to the east. And they saw each other very well."

    How can that be possible?)

But the answer is for a different riddle

Well spotted, Chewbacca. Some dwarf mixed it with

I have corrected wording of this puzzle in OP to the following:

A ladder hangs over the side of a ship anchored in a port. The bottom rung touches the water. The distance between rungs is 20 cm and the length of the ladder is 180 cm. The tide is rising at the rate of 15 cm each hour.

When will the water reach the seventh rung from the top?

  5. Welcome to the Den, dontgivemetheanswer. This is one of my favorites and I have even put it on a separate page dedicated to the Best Puzzles. Note that there is also including more than 150 replies.

To keep all important information on 1 place I close this thread and you can continue discussion in the old thread if you have anything substantial to add (which would be a bit hard since there are +150 good replies :-).

    Enjoy the Den ;)

  6. Welcome to the Den, varin. This is one of my favorite puzzles. It's actually the very first among my Logic Puzzles and it's also quite often posted in this forum. Since it's already part of this site and DeeGee gave the correct solution I will close this thread.

Feel free to post puzzles that are new and remember that you can always check that via the search box - detailed help on searching is in in the Board Guidelines as well.

    Enjoy the Den ;)

  7. Hi my computer is doing the exact same thing, i'll let you know if i find a way to resolve this, any comments on how to fix this would be much appreciated.

Perhaps using Mozilla Firefox and higher screen resolution might help. Unfortunately, I can't replicate your issue.

  8. Click on (report) then tell the moderator it is solved.thumbsup.gif

    oh thanks

Actually, you can mark the thread you created as "Solved" yourself. There is no need to contact anybody. See rules at the top (Important: READ BEFORE POSTING).

  9. Have you tried sending them (bonanova, Martini) private conversation or leaving a comment on their profile?

BTW, it was me who deleted your 1st thread since you just advertised some other site in your very first post and you even placed it in inappropriate forum section.

  10. Make sure that you have javascript enabled. Then try to add reply and click on the blue button "Spoiler". It should look like this.

    hidden text

You can also quote this post to see the code of spoiler.

  11. Welcome to the Den, lcecoolz. Let me direct your attention to the rules of this forum - see "Important: READ BEFORE POSTING" at the top. This puzzle is already part of this site. I even dedicated a whole page to water puzzles.

However, don't hesitate to contribute with fresh (not posted yet) puzzles. You can search from the homepage if you're not sure if it's been posted.

    Thread locked.

  12. I see what you mean now.

ctrl+b works with firefox, however, in chrome the keyboard shortcut is not suppressed by the forum shortcut. Chrome existing keyboard shortcuts can not be changed easily as far as I know.

  13. Both bold and italics shortcuts work in Google Chrome for me - this post is constructed with shortcuts in Google Chrome.

If you quote this post you'll see that the shortcuts are still the same.

  14. Welcome to the Den, Sourabh. I have moved this thread to the appropriate forum section - New Logic/Math Puzzles.

This is one of my favorite puzzles. It is actually in the very first thread of the forum section mentioned above.

Let me direct your attention to the forum rules (see "Important: READ BEFORE POSTING" above). You will find many useful tips there - for instance, not to post puzzles which are already part of this site (you can do a quick search before you post a puzzle that you have not created).

    Thread locked.

  15. I seem to still have trouble with the spoiler if I put a title in. I suppose I can just live without a title, just thought I would let you (and others) know it doesn't seem to be working still.

add reply - click the spoiler button - enter spoiler title and spoiler text

    hidden text

You can investigate this example if you quote this post (eg. not that title is written as 'title').

  16. Everything should be working now:

    1. spoilers for old and new posts (including the spoiler button, optional spoiler title etc.)

    2. reputation working - max. 100 positive and 100 negative points within 24 hours

    3. view new content can be set in "my settings - settings - search" - I prefer to have only threads/posts that I have not read

    4. font size and other details can be adjusted later

  17. Found another spelling error:

It should probably read "destroyed". I think the ?? is due to my old IE browser, as it also tends to replace apostrophes with question marks.

Edit: I just noticed it should also read "SURPRISE."

    Corrected. Thanks.
