  1. This may need to go in the Logic section...Not sure, I guess it is a word riddle.

    D...December

yes it was a word/logic riddle, and i knew it would be too easy, i just thought it was interesting when i saw the name across my desktop

  2. YES!!! This is it, and my reasoning is in the spoiler.

    TAP

Without a word, you are out for the count. Tap out (with out)

With love, no words, to show you care. Love tap (with love)

With beer you drank from a bottomless fount, Beer tap (with beer)

A door to show that someone is there. Tap on a door (no with, sorry)

YAY! My first solved riddle! B))

  3. the birthday boy gets 9 shakes and hugs from the men and 5 from the women

the men shake 9c2 hands, the women shake 5c2 hands, and the 9 men each hug the 5 women

    so thats 14 + 45 hugs = 59

    and 14 + 36 + 10 shakes = 60

  4. a fist

    boxing, knock someone out

sign language, fist over the heart? (not sure about that one)

    fistful of beer

    knocking on a door

Without a word, you are out for the count.

With love, no words, to show you care.

With beer you drank from a bottomless fount,

A door to show that someone is there.

  5. each prisoner is assigned another prisoner to watch

if the person you are watching has a 0 you raise your hand immediately...after 1 second if they have a 1 you raise your hand...after 2 seconds if they have a 2...etc

this way everyone knows their own number

  6. numbers 1,2,3, and 4

if you have 1, you can make 2: 1+1

if you have 3, you have 1+2, and you can easily make any other number with sums/products of 1,2, and 3 but 4 could be useful

and if you have 4, you could make this from 1 and 3, so you want the first, or from 2 and 2, so you would want the second also

i can't believe i'm posting such a bad idea, but it is all i can come up with so far

  7. Hi dyalDragon,

The birthday boy is is mentioned specifically as a man in the question. B))

noticed that right after i posted, need to learn to read more carefully

k if the birthday boy is a man, then that leaves 9 men after him and the totals should be 60 hugs, 61 handshakes, and 5 neglected kids

however if the birthday boy is a man, and is also not counted as one of the ten men, then there is the birthday man, 10 men, 5 kids and 4 women

then we have 55 hugs, 66 handshakes

and i still don't know if there is cake or not

  8. I actually dont know because I've never been to the south pole, but I'll take your word for it.

never been either, but i did look it up after you mentioned it and it is possible

also saw some reports of people 'chasing sunsets' in planes around alaska and canada who saw the sunset before they took off then saw the sun re-rise afterwards, so i guess that would be another way to do it :D

  9. assuming the birthday boy is a kid and not a grown man...

15 shakes and hugs for the birthday boy, 9+8+7+...+1 handshakes for the men meeting men, 4+3+...+1 handshakes for the women meeting women, and 50 hugs for the women from the men

totaled up 65 hugs, 70 handshakes, and 4 neglected kids

    is there cake? :P

  10. I think your talking about the 6 month day and 6 month night, but the sun still rises in the east.

actually it is possible to see it in the west, or at least on your left as you face north, which would technically be west right... there would be a point when the sun, after the months of darkness, would rise for the first time, and if you were close enough to the south pole, facing north, and the sun rose in the left side of your field of vision....

  11. you're a penguin near the south pole...not sure what part of the year it would be but at some point the sun will rise in the west (at least it will seem like west to you because the sun doesn't reach a high enough point in the sky to "rise" in antarctica until it is past the point where you would be looking north

so technically you are looking northwest

for the second one you could stand a few feet away from the north/south pole and look towards it, that way for 5 feet you are looking south, but then you are seeing north also because anything farther than 5 feet away is 'north' of the south pole...or vice versa

  12. in essence, the way the OP is worded brings this down to a human nature problem i think...

if you open the box and see 3 dollars, switch... either way it goes you can't really buy anything with 3 dollars anyway

but if you open the first box and see 3000 dollars, the cost of switching has just gone up a lot in terms of what your options are (i.e. 3000 dollars is much more useful than 1000, but 9000 is even better!)

taking all this into account i think it depends on the amount in the box and the person making the decision, either way you are getting money out of the deal :P

as far as not being able to open the box, sure the expected gain (over multiple repetitions) is greater than the expected loss, but if you won't know what is in the box until you finish making your decision and can open it then it doesn't really matter to anyone except the person who put the money in the box in the first place

  13. notation(H heavy ball, L light ball)

first, label the balls 1,2,3,4,5, and 6

compare balls 1 and 4, there are two possible results: either they are different or the same...

if different, then move on to 2 and 5, same results: either same or different...

if different then weigh 3 and 6 to find their weights and you are done.

if 2 and 5 are the same, then 3 and 6 are also the same and you just need to compare 2 and 3 to find which pair is HH and which is LL...done

now back to 1 and 4 being the same...

compare 1+4 against 2+5... you know 1 and 4 are the same, and this step will tell you whether they are HH or LL, you now know the weights of 1 and 4

next compare 3 and 6, if they are different then you are done, because 2 and 5 will then be the same and the opposite of 1 and 4, but if 3 and 6 are the same, then they are the opposite of 1 and 4 and you must weigh 2 and 5 separately to find out their weights

sorry if this is a little hard to follow, but basically you have 3 steps best case and 4 steps worst case

put one red with one of the whites and the other white with one of the blues

if both sides are the same then you know the blue red are opposites because we already know the whites are opposites, now you just have to weigh the whites to tell which is heavy/light and that will tell you which of the red/blue is heavy/light, and from there it is simple
