hello plasmid - happy new year. as always, have really been enjoying this latest I'm not a. had a different thought with each stanza when first read.

check out the time stamps in the Phantom thread. cant be a coincidence. but again set up a spread sheet to iterate different combinations with no luck as of yet.

that's where i'm stuck, too. definitely not a coincidence imo. have been trying all sorts of letter and word length comparison matches with keywords, alphabet, text from the Secret Level, etc. the only thing I can think of special about twenty four is hours in a day. also seems maybe of possible importance because of the repeated mentions of time; especially the last three lines of the first poem. still think something's missing. still at it...

pretty stuck on the Time of Madness. think it's pretty tough and could use some group think. and the witching hour is fast approaching. so, re Y-san's post above:
...found a code solver but it returned jibberish until i advanced each letter of the keyword by one (s-->t, h-->i, i-->j, etc). had originally set up a spread sheet where each of the nine key letter values were subtracted from 26 and added to the corresponding letters of the ciphertext and had no issues.

don't know. perhaps you're further along than I? the first four letters in your spoiler do seem to recur and think they will play a significant roll. I'm just not there yet.

if the first room has one apple in it, don't select it; otherwise, the same as k-man. for a finite number of apples, which is ultimately the case as they are counted, this improves on the 50/50 odds giving Bob a slight advantage over Alice.

assuming a square bottom maximizes volume (which is pretty arbitrary but my calculus is too rusty to deal with two variables):
V = x * x * ((32-x^2)/4x)
V = x^2(8/x-x/4)
V = 8x-(x^3)/4
then differentiating and equating to zero to maximize V:
8-3/4x^2 = 0
x = (32/3)^.5
x = 3.266
V = 17.419
the above spoiler was attempting to describe a open rectangular parallelepiped with a square base of length sqrt(32/3) and height of sqrt(8/3). such a mold would have surface area of 32 sq units and volume of 17.4186 cubic units.

seems to me every triangle will have a greatest angle between 60 and 180 degrees and cant see how any of those would be more likely than another so three quarters of those will have a greatest angle greater than 90 degrees?

researched to find the titles of the quotes solved and counted letters according to the blue numbers to come up with VERY TRULY Y(OURS?) IE. Thus the thought that the final answer might be a VALEDICTION which sounded somewhat familiar/tonally sensible re Sherlock Holmes.

along with plasmid's findings, am thinking the factor rich approach may not be optimal as it takes a fair amount of steps to get one of a factor pair. what may be best are powers of two. using 8 as the starting number, one can generate all numbers between 1 and 64 in five steps except 53 and 59 which can be done in six steps (one of which can be 8 x 8). from there 65 - 128 can be constructed in at most two more steps: 8 x 8 and 64 + (1-64). Then 129-256 can be constructed similarly: 64 + 64 and 128 + (1-128) for a maximum number of nine steps. some of the 129-256 can probably be reduced to fewer steps but thinking not all. have not run the spreadsheet past 64.
though certainly have no clue as to proving this as best or an analytical way to go about finding the best starting number without a brute force exhaustive search.

hey Y-san - not sure though have seen similar elsewhere. Tried to replicate but perhaps you can post an example of the dialogue box output v input in [ code ]? What browser are you using? Are you typing out your own tags? Use " instead of '? Probably a deeper programming/mismatched character set issue. But haven't really got a clue. Except I do know I enjoy your post layouts so hope this issue can be overcome.
