So the Grandfather/father/daughter answer would work if it specifically said that everyone has a father somewhere. It might give it away, but it goes into specifics where you may include the daughter. By saying two sons and two fathers the author assumed that everyone would think of this as an all-male situation. A Grandfather (who is of course a son) and his son (who is of course a father). The grandfather bagged 2 and his son bagged 1, therefore each can claim to have shot a duck.
