Question

This one's old but if you've never herd it....

Two fathers and two sons each shoot a duck.

No one has shot the same duck.

Only three ducks have been shot.

grandfather / father / son

That would be three sons and two fathers. The grandfather has to be somebodys son.

How about this: Grandfather / father / daughter?

In riddles like these, you usually are expected not to know anything besides the information given, no matter how obvious. So the Grandfather/father/daughter answer would work if it specifically said that everyone has a father somewhere. It might give it away, but it goes into specifics where you may include the daughter. By saying two sons and two fathers the author assumed that everyone would think of this as an all-male situation.

I'd go with the mainstream on this one. Grandfather/father/son
