It would appear to be moving up but I know that is the red and white pattern used by the Barber surgeons during the 17th century causing this confusion but it is neither moving up or down it is just on its axis spinning.

Thanks, it is'nt much but, still an illusion. The colors might be used as were the USA flag. Someone sure came up with a catchy idea. :)

The colours are that of the blood and bandages used by the British Barber Surgeons during the 17th century

I would not doubt that either. I never found who the inventor was but, probably a famous barber at one time. Until this day, I still see them around, and don't know if they are still being manufactured.

I was hypnotized as a kid, trying to figure what the heck makes it look like that. I can see the white stripe as a drill bit, going in a downward motion because I look at it in both ways. Some of you have not been concentrating on it like me. :P:D

Oddly enough, something that has nothing to do with a haircut has been a major symbol for the shop.

It depends on whether you look at the stripes twirling down like a drill or looking at the fact that the stripes are staying in place but just moving up.(a.k.a. thinking that it spins on an axis)But it sometimes looks bothways to me..... I see the illusion akaslickster!
