Question

Eight congruent squares are layered on top of one another as shown. If the square numbered 8 was the last to be placed, determine the order in which the other seven were laid to end up with the arrangement shown.

Are the first seven squares congruent to the eighth square? They do not appear to be so. My answer below is assuming that you had intended for all eight squares to be the same size.

I believe they were laid out clockwise starting with the one in the upper right hand corner.
