Question

Below is a quote from a famous person, scrambled vertically. This means that each letter was swapped up or down, but in the same column. Punctuation and spaces are not moved.

For example, the following phrase could be transformed as follows:

the don

dog --> tae

ran rhg

And here's the quote:

b pfnds retri mo t pahg ol ahb arfoe unalen

aa sn shnednee, m gsan dosisro er oioe lnd c-

odue. le gifsfioneia ritieua, pne yntpeite r-

dsoa awio togfcn nc stienliu ngr siraur os s-

A hyphen at the end of the line indicates that the word is split between that line and the next.

Explain how you got "tae ran rhg" please. Seems to me there should be a couple Os in there, and a D?

Also, when you say "swapped up or down", is there an assumption that a swapped letter is either on the line directly above/below, or might the swap reach farther up/down? Are all "swaps" a switching of two letters, or might it be said that letters have been "jumbled" vertically, such that the letters are simply no longer in their original positions? If they are truly "swaps", can they be swapped repeatedly?

I can't seem to find the edit function. Anyway, I need to post it as code apparently, because the formatting is messed up. (Ignore the color. I can't seem to get rid of it).

“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” ~Albert Einstein

My congratulations to Thalia for getting it close and finding the original quote.

Patterned the same for easy verification:

A human being is a part of the whole called

by us Universe, a part limited in time and s-

pace. He experiences himself, his thoughts a-

nd feeling as something separated from the r-

est, a kind of optical delusion of his consc-

iousness. this delusion is a kind of prison

for us, restricting us to our personal desir-

es and to affection for a few persons neares-

t to us. Our task must be to free ourselves

from this prison by widening our circles of c-

ompassion to embrace all living creatures an-

d the whole of nature in its beauty.

Notice a slight variation in wording from Thalia with placement of and addition of the articles "the" and "a". I found both wordings attributed to Einstein but do not determine which is proper.

Further examination indicates I have made at least 2 mistakes.

The word circles in 10th line should read circle and I have line 4 starting with the letter "n" while no line in the original quote starts with "n" while I did not use one of the "d"s that did start a line.

One of these may have been a typo from the puzzles entry. So I ask, Should one of the "d"s be "n"?

Yea. I saw the first missing "the" and decided it was a typo. It was past midnight for me so I wasn't about to spend hours weeding out the typos.
